Searching for Gluinos at the Tevatron and Beyond

The Key Idea
Gluino searches at hadron colliders traditionally assumed specific SUSY spectra with long decay chains. This proceedings contribution reviews a more model-independent approach: focusing on the robust signature of jets plus missing transverse energy without requiring specific intermediate particles. The key insight is that gluinos that decay directly to quarks and a neutralino produce a distinctive jets+MET signature that can be searched for with simple kinematic variables, independent of the details of the rest of the SUSY spectrum.
The approach described here, developed in the companion papers on directly decaying gluinos and jets+MET, helped establish the simplified-model paradigm that became standard practice at the LHC.
